News and Information
New Mexico Territory became the 47th state on January 6, 1912. It is the fifth largest geographically and one of the most rural states, with only 17 persons per square mile compared to the U.S. at 87. Long before statehood, New Mexico was a territory of many cultures. This diversity continues to this day. The current population of the state is approximately 49% Hispanic, 11% Native American, 3% Asian, 3% African American, and 36% white, not Hispanic. Thirty-four percent speak a language other than English at home. Among the 34%, the languages spoken most often are Spanish and Diné.
Census Data
Population, social, economic, and housing data are collected and tabulated by the U.S. Census Bureau for the decennial census and American Community Survey (ACS). The ACS is an ongoing statistical household survey sent to approximately 3 million households every year. From the survey, the Bureau is able to produce estimates which are released annually.
